		<description>
Searle x Waldron Architecture is an emerging Melbourne practice co-founded by Nick Searle and Suzannah Waldron in 2007 after winning the first stage of the MoCAPE international competition for a Museum of Contemporary Art.

Recently we have completed a project for the City of Ballarat - delivering a multipurpose Annexe for the Art Gallery of Ballarat which allows this leading arts institution to engage with its urban realm, host public events and increase capacity.

APPROACH
Our approach is to make projects with equal parts intuition and reason, developing distinctive and inventive architecture. Our proposals are strategic, designs are innovative and solutions are unique.

We apply the same design ambition to all scales and typologies from small scale residential, commercial and public realm projects to larger scale civic and urban plans.

We are a young and ambitious practice who enjoy a challenge. We place a strong emphasis on uncovering opportunities where specific constraints and conditions become openings for design differentiation and catalysts for creative and innovative outcomes.

Our innovative approach to design has seen the office win several international design competitions for public buildings and urban design in Europe and Asia. These include a ‘City Spatial Design &#38; Mobility Centre’ project sponsored by UN-Habitat in Kosovo, and 1st round of ‘MoCAPE - Museum of Contemporary Art &#38; Planning Exhibition’ in Shenzhen, China.

Our design approach is inclusive not exclusive. We look to engage in dialogue, collaborate and share ideas, approaching design strategically rather than imposing solutions.

We explore strategies for architectural innovation by integrating architectural practice and research agendas through our involvement as architecture &#38; urban design studio leaders at RMIT University.

Our projects have been published and exhibited in Australia, Europe and Asia, including at the National Design Centre in Federation Square, the Netherlands Architecture Institute and the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism &#38; Architecture.

		<description>ART GALLERY OF BALLARAT ANNEXE.
AWARDED OPEN PUBLIC TENDER.
FEATURED ON THE COVER OF ARCHITECTURE AUSTRALIA.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/55182/655317/Annexe-Art-Gallery-Ballarat-SXWA-Exterior-Night_700.jpg" width="700" height="467" width_o="700" height_o="467" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/55182/655317/Annexe-Art-Gallery-Ballarat-SXWA-Exterior-Night_o.jpg" data-mid="12493841"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Annexe is a project for the City of Ballarat to expand the Art Gallery of Ballarat function spaces and address the adjacent Alfred Deakin Plaza and heritage precinct of Camp Street.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/55182/655317/Annexe-Art-Gallery-Ballarat-SXWA-South-Doors-Closed_700.jpg" width="700" height="461" width_o="700" height_o="461" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/55182/655317/Annexe-Art-Gallery-Ballarat-SXWA-South-Doors-Closed_o.jpg" data-mid="12493784"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/55182/655317/Annexe-Art-Gallery-Ballarat-SXWA-Exterior-Shadow_700.jpg" width="700" height="597" width_o="700" height_o="597" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/55182/655317/Annexe-Art-Gallery-Ballarat-SXWA-Exterior-Shadow_o.jpg" data-mid="12493766"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/55182/655317/Annexe-Art-Gallery-Ballarat-SXWA-Awning-Steps_700.jpg" width="700" height="618" width_o="700" height_o="618" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/55182/655317/Annexe-Art-Gallery-Ballarat-SXWA-Awning-Steps_o.jpg" data-mid="12493790"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The project adopts three hybrid postures of a public hall, a verandah and a band stand. The space is flexible with operable glazing fully opening and directly addressing the plaza to act as a focal point for festivals and an impromptu stage for public addresses.

The design harmonises with the existing urban realm and forms a transitory space between the gallery, Alfred Deakin Plaza and historic Huyghue House.

The project is also designed to facilitate private functions with the ability to operate independently from other gallery spaces. From the new Annexe patrons will enjoy the unique historical outlook over the plaza to the lower parts of Ballarat City and the surrounding hills beyond.

		<description>AUSTRALIA HOUSE COMPETITION.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/55182/2270150/Split-House-SXWA-View1_700.jpg" width="700" height="415" width_o="700" height_o="415" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/55182/2270150/Split-House-SXWA-View1_o.jpg" data-mid="12491454"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Split House is a combined residence and artists studio / exhibition space. The house was entered in the Australia House international competition - creating a space for Australian artists, to be used for the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2012 in Japan.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/55182/2270150/Split-House-SXWA-Plans_700.gif" width="700" height="415" width_o="700" height_o="415" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/55182/2270150/Split-House-SXWA-Plans_o.gif" data-mid="12491459"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Verandahs and Engawa are traditional spaces found in Australian and Japanese houses. Split House links two separate working and living spaces with these two unprogrammed interstitial spaces. These can be used as open places for casual conversation or formal entry. Also they can facilitate storm shutters to create an enclosed verandah against seasonal weather.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/55182/2270150/Split-House-SXWA-View2_700.jpg" width="700" height="448" width_o="700" height_o="448" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/55182/2270150/Split-House-SXWA-View2_o.jpg" data-mid="12491466"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

For the triennial the whole floor area can be used as an exhibition space. Multiple openings can create a variety of ways to configure spaces. The residence can sleep a number of persons in the loft and by reconfiguring the dining space with operable partitions.

'Excursions of Scale' is an architectural installation which re-imagines the facade of Majorca House in one of Melbourne's laneways. The project is confined within the constraints of three jewellery display cases at the side entry of the building located off a busy cafe precinct of Centre Place. This constraint positions the artwork to engage with an active public audience of the laneway.

The proposed facade expands and transforms the existing timber framed entrance doors down the lane varying the density, intensity and directionality beginning at a scale of 1:1.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/55182/2269468/Majorca-House-SXWA-05_700.jpg" width="700" height="467" width_o="700" height_o="467" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/55182/2269468/Majorca-House-SXWA-05_o.jpg" data-mid="12491948"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
The mutable screen can be read as an excursion across a range of architectural scales – shifting from window to facade screen to city grid. Reflective surfaces mirror movement and capture activity from the lane way at human scale. Graduated transitions shift to an exploration of a multistory facade. Further expansions re-orientate to a reading of the city grid in a final excursion of scale.

The building co-generates power and utilising excess heated water coupled with absorption chillers and displacement air conditioning to regulate the temperature of the building. Natural cross-ventilation and the stack effect through voids expel hot air via roof vents. Black water treatment and rainwater harvesting are utilised to reduce water consumption.
